Buy full-spool multipacks when you already use those materials and colors; buy refills when you own the correct reusable spool; buy a large reel only after checking the holder, feeder, and dryer. These are three different formats. The cheapest advertised roll is not necessarily the lowest cost per usable kilogram.
This researched guide compares buying formats and concrete product ecosystems, not hands-on feeding performance. It is especially useful after you have tested one roll and are deciding how to reorder.

Separate quantity discounts from spool formats
| Format | Product example | What you receive or need | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Several complete rolls | SUNLU PLA 1 kg rolls and quantity offers | Each selected roll has its own spool; confirm the checkout quantities | You use several colors or want sealed backup rolls |
| Refill coil | Bambu PLA Basic Refill | Filament requiring the matching reusable spool | You already have an empty compatible reel |
| Refill with generation-specific fit | Prusament Refill 900 g | Current refill format and the appropriate new Prusament spool | You use that ecosystem and can follow its assembly procedure |
| A larger single reel | Prusament PETG range, including 2 kg options | One heavier reel; check its actual dimensions and holder support | Long runs in one established material and color |
A multipack can contain ordinary 1 kg reels, refills, small samples, or several materials. Read the itemized contents rather than inferring them from “bulk” in the product title.
Refills are not a universal standard
Bambu’s reusable-spool instructions describe a specific alignment and locking process. Buy the refill that matches that system, then follow its sequence. A spool that looks approximately the right size is not proof of compatibility.
Prusament now has two important generations. The legacy guide covers 1 kg refills without an NFC tag; the new procedure covers 900 g refills. Prusa says old refills do not fit the new spools and recommends using new refills with new spools only. Check the exact reel you own before ordering.
Do not remove retaining bands until the manufacturer's assembly procedure calls for it. Keep the coil controlled and the material label with the finished spool. Refilling is a purchase-saving workflow only if you are willing to perform the necessary assembly carefully.
Compare cost per kilogram, including the reusable reel
Use delivered cost ÷ net filament kilograms. For a hypothetical $22 refill containing 900 g, the material cost is $24.44 per kilogram. A hypothetical $24 complete 1 kg roll is slightly cheaper per kilogram, even though the refill's item price is lower. These are example prices, not current Prusament offers.
If a compatible reusable reel costs $12 and each matching refill saves $3 against the same material on a complete spool, it takes four refills to recover the reel cost: $12 ÷ $3 = 4. Shipping, assembly supplies, and your time can change the result. If you already own the empty reel, that upfront cost is zero.
A real price anchor from our check is SUNLU PLA Black 1 kg at $10.29 for the USA variant. Do not compare a refill only against its own brand's most expensive complete spool if a supported full-spool alternative also meets your needs.

Discount the colors you will never use
Suppose a hypothetical six-roll assortment costs $72. Its advertised cost is $12 per kilogram if each roll contains 1 kg. If only four colors will be useful for your planned work and the other two sit indefinitely, the initial $72 purchase has supplied four useful kilograms at $18 each for that work.
This does not mean an unused color is worthless forever. It means the discount should be evaluated against your actual printing plan. Compare a custom selection of four rolls with the assortment before adding two storage obligations.
Make a three-month material estimate from completed projects or slicer totals. The prints-per-spool guide helps translate planned jobs into consumption. Keep your favorite everyday color in reserve before buying a wide collection for projects you have not selected.
Large reels can move the cost into other equipment
A 2 kg or 3 kg reel may reduce spool changes, but the printer still needs a supported holder and a usable feed route. Check loaded dimensions and weight, not only filament diameter. An automatic feeder designed around a particular reel size does not gain capacity because the polymer itself is compatible.
The storage and drying equipment must fit as well. For example, Polymaker specifies up to 300 mm diameter and 118 mm width for its PolyDryer Box XL. That is a physical limit to compare with a candidate reel, not a guarantee for every product sold as 3 kg.
Price any additional holder, container, or supported drying arrangement into the purchase. A small reduction per kilogram can take many rolls to recover a new equipment expense. See the full spool-fit checklist before changing formats.
A practical reorder rule
- Buy a multipack after a single-roll trial succeeds and most of its contents match your next projects.
- Buy refills after confirming generation, net weight, reusable-reel fit, and the actual saving.
- Buy a large reel when you regularly consume one material and have verified every part of its route.
- Keep buying singles while exploring colors, grades, or a new printer workflow.
Store unopened and opened stock with clear material labels and an order date. Keep different formulations distinguishable even when their colors look alike. A purchasing system that makes the next correct spool easy to identify can be worth more than a small discount spread across years of unused inventory.
We have not tested refill assembly effort or feeding reliability across brands. The compatibility statements above come from the named manufacturers; they should not be extended to look-alike third-party reels.
