For a first PLA purchase, choose one plain, unfilled spool that fits your printer, has clear printing guidance, and suits a project you actually plan to make. SUNLU PLA is a low-price candidate, Bambu PLA Basic offers an integrated Bambu workflow, Polymaker PLA Pro targets tougher functional work, and Prusament is worth considering for its documented material range.
This is a researched buying guide, not a hands-on comparison. Our shortlist identifies reasons to investigate each product; it does not establish which prints best on your machine. Start with a single roll before buying a color collection.

Four PLA candidates for different priorities
| Product | Reason to consider it | Reason to skip it |
|---|---|---|
| SUNLU PLA | A price-focused first roll; US Black 1 kg listed at $10.29 | You need a particular documented mechanical property rather than basic PLA |
| Bambu PLA Basic | RFID information for the Bambu AMS workflow; spool and refill options | You would pay a premium for automation your printer cannot use |
| Polymaker PLA Pro | A toughened formulation to investigate for functional prototypes; Black 1 kg listed at $23.99 | Your work is mainly simple visual mockups and the premium has no clear purpose |
| Prusament PLA | A named material family with published technical documentation | The delivered price is hard to justify for disposable drafts |
Price check: October 9, 2026. Listed US-dollar prices refer to the exact variants named, before tax and shipping. Promotions, colors, packages, and availability can change; confirm the final cart.
Bambu and Prusament prices are omitted here because the final product, regional checkout, and selected format need a fresh comparison. A missing price is preferable to a misleading sale headline.

For desk organizers, fit prototypes, and display pieces, begin with ordinary PLA in a neutral color. For a part you will bend or knock repeatedly, investigate the exact toughened formulation and print a representative sample. For a glossy figurine, select appearance deliberately instead of paying for a functional grade whose advantages you do not need.
Polymaker identifies its current PLA Pro as a replacement for PolyLite PLA Pro. The names are close, but you should retain the label and use documentation for the roll you receive. Do not assume an older profile or review describes the current formulation.
Our PLA versus PLA+ guide explains the property questions; our finish guide helps choose appearance. A plus, pro, silk, or matte label is not a universal guarantee of suitability.
Check the four details hidden behind the color selector
- Diameter: match the printer specification. Do not confuse filament diameter with nozzle diameter.
- Net material: confirm the quantity is filament weight, not shipping weight or a multipack total.
- Packaging: determine whether you receive a complete spool or a refill needing separate reusable sides.
- Exact material: check that a selected color does not also change the formulation to silk, glow, filled, or another grade.
Bambu explicitly distinguishes its PLA Basic refill from filament supplied with a spool. The refill alone does not include the reel. That difference matters more than a small price saving if this is your first purchase.
Use the spool compatibility checklist for automatic feeders and dryers. A correctly sized strand can still arrive on a reel that needs a different holder arrangement.
Translate a spool price into project cost
Using the observed Black 1 kg prices above, a hypothetical 120 g job consumes about $1.23 of SUNLU PLA or $2.88 of Polymaker PLA Pro. The calculation is job grams divided by 1,000, multiplied by spool price. Those numbers assume the same consumed mass; they do not claim equivalent performance.
If a functional part needs a particular material property, its $1.65 material difference may be less important than meeting the requirement. If it is a temporary size mockup, that property may add no value. Include supports, purge, and rejected attempts when making your own estimate.
The printing cost calculator helps compare jobs after you enter the price you actually paid. Shipping can reverse a cheap-single-roll comparison, so compare delivered carts before choosing a supplier.
Place a small order that teaches you something
Choose one spool and two modest models: a simple part you already know prints well, and a small section of your intended project. The familiar model checks basic behavior; the project section checks the details you care about, such as legibility, mating surfaces, or a flexible latch.
Save the exact material preset and label the sample with brand, grade, color, and date. If you later buy another color, treat the first print as a check rather than assuming nothing can change. Keep enough of the original roll to compare an unexpected result.
Do not place a bulk order simply because the first layer looked good. Inspect the finished part, assemble it if relevant, and judge it in its intended setting. A useful purchasing record is one sentence: “This roll and this profile produced the required result.”
When to spend more, and when to reconsider PLA
Spend more when you can name the benefit: a required color, a useful profile and material identification workflow, a documented formulation, or repeat ordering that saves your time. Skip a premium when it only changes the package or gives you a claim you cannot connect to your project.
Prusament’s PLA guidance lists low temperature resistance among its limitations. A higher-priced PLA should not be assumed suitable for a hot location. Review the exact material data and the actual use conditions before selecting a functional material.
We have not measured color accuracy, dimensional consistency, strength, or failure rate for this shortlist. Treat it as a manageable first shopping list, then use your own sample and requirements to decide whether to reorder.
