Buy a single, unfilled PETG spool with clear material guidance, then budget for compatible plate preparation and dry storage. SUNLU PETG is a low-cost trial candidate, Polymaker PETG offers a documented current high-speed formulation, and Prusament PETG is a useful candidate when its material records and Prusa workflow matter to you.
This is a researched shortlist, not a hands-on ranking. PETG, PET, and fiber-filled PETG are different purchasing decisions. The products below are ordinary unfilled PETG choices for home printers that support the material.

Three PETG products to compare
| Product | Checked US-dollar price | Reason to consider it | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|---|
| SUNLU PETG | Black 1 kg: $10.49 | Low purchase cost for a first trial | Select USA shipment and the ordinary PETG formulation |
| Polymaker PETG | Black, New Formula, 1 kg: $18.99 | Current formulation with published printing and material information | Distinguish it from remaining PolyLite PETG stock |
| Prusament PETG | Jet Black 1 kg: $29.99 | Published manufacturing records and a clearly identified material family | Compare delivery route and the exact spool/refill format |

The price gap is real for those variants, but it does not establish a ranking of print quality or usable strength. We have not run a controlled comparison across these products.

Write down why you are moving beyond PLA. A repeatable practical requirement is more useful than “stronger”: perhaps the part needs a different balance of stiffness and bending behavior, or you already have a PETG design and profile you want to reproduce.
Do not infer suitability for continuous load, heat, sunlight, or chemicals from the polymer name alone. Check the exact product's data against the use conditions, and test a noncritical representative part. A lab specimen value does not certify the finished geometry.
If your goal is simply a decorative desk model, PLA may already meet it with less work. The PLA and PETG comparison helps decide the material family before you compare shops. If PETG is justified, buy enough for a trial and the intended project rather than starting with a large mixed-color pack.
Check the formulation and the usable profile
Polymaker describes its new PETG as a replacement for PolyLite PETG. That is a reason to record the exact name on the package, not to mix old and new material data. Keep the matching profile, drying guidance, and technical sheet with your project notes.
High-speed marketing also needs context. The speed a machine reaches depends on the model, layer size, nozzle, extrusion capacity, and cooling. A number on the filament page does not mean every wall of every object can be printed at that speed.
Look for a supported starting profile for your machine and nozzle. If one is unavailable, be prepared to calibrate a small sample before a long print. A familiar, appropriate profile can be worth more to a beginner than the cheapest kilogram.
Include the plate and storage in your shopping plan
Before your first PETG print, check the printer and sheet manufacturer's instructions for the exact build surface. Do not assume a surface sold as smooth PEI uses the same preparation across brands. Adhesion that is excessive can be as inconvenient as a part that will not stick.
Our filament and plate tool is deliberately narrow: PLA and PETG on genuine Prusa Smooth, Textured, and Satin sheets used with the Original Prusa MK4 or MK4S. For another system, use its own documentation.
Plan where an opened roll will live. Polymaker’s PETG page emphasizes moisture management and distinguishes storage from preparing the filament. Choose a storage arrangement you can close after each job; follow the exact filament's instructions when active drying is needed. See our storage-kit shortlist for buying options.
Compare the price of a finished project
For a hypothetical job consuming 180 g in total, the checked spool prices give material costs of approximately $1.89 for SUNLU, $3.42 for Polymaker, and $5.40 for Prusament. These are simple purchasing estimates, not evidence that all three produce interchangeable parts.
Use the consumed mass from your own slicer, including supports and purge. Add shipping when comparing small orders. A $10 shipping charge on one kilogram adds $10 per kilogram to that purchase; spread over several useful rolls, the effect changes.
A higher price can be reasonable if you value a documented workflow or need a particular color. A low-cost trial is reasonable if you are willing to develop a profile. The cost calculator lets you compare the actual delivered prices without treating brand names as quality scores.
Buy a trial roll, inspect it, then reorder
Print a small model with the relevant features: a hole and mating edge for a bracket, or a visible outside wall for a case. Save the profile and inspect the finished part. Do not evaluate a new PETG only by whether it completed without stopping.
If it strings, follow our PETG stringing workflow instead of immediately abandoning the brand or increasing several settings at once. Check material condition, the documented profile, and the hardware separately.
Skip a large bundle when it commits you to an untested grade or unwanted colors. Skip a premium grade when its documented benefit does not address your requirement. This guide cannot establish long-term durability, brand-to-brand color matching, or how a particular spool will behave in your automatic feeder; verify those separately before a large repeat order.
